If you are new to SportsHighLight, start here. The site is built around one premise: sports numbers are useful when they explain the game you actually watched, and embarrassing when they try to replace it.
The core reading path
- {shl_link(‘/sports-analytics-explained-guide/’, ‘Sports Analytics, Honestly: The Working Primer’)} — the house primer for how we use numbers without worshipping them.
- {shl_link(‘/nba-advanced-stats-efficiency-usage-context/’, ‘NBA Advanced Stats: A Field Guide That Has Survived a Decade of Arguments’)} — the basketball lens: usage, efficiency, pace, and the parts of the box score that still lie.
- {shl_link(‘/expected-goals-soccer-xg-explained/’, ‘The Leicester Problem: Expected Goals, Honestly Explained’)} — the football lens: xG, Leicester, finishing runs, and why the model can be right while the season still laughs at it.
- {shl_link(‘/team-trends-real-improvement-vs-noise/’, ‘Reading Team Trends: The Second Sample Rule’)} — the streak detector, because nine wins in November can be either a revelation or a scheduling prank.
- {shl_link(‘/player-stats-that-matter-more-than-raw-totals/’, ‘The Iverson Line: Player Stats That Outlive the Box Score’)} — the player-value piece, built around the old problem of production, burden, and context.
- {shl_link(‘/how-to-build-game-analysis-article-from-data/’, ‘How to Write a Game-Analysis Article That Survives Six Months’)} — the editorial method, written partly as a warning to ourselves.
How to read this site
The numbers here are not treated as a priesthood. They are treated as witnesses. Some are reliable. Some are drunk. The job is to make them sit in the same room as the tape, the schedule, the injuries, the incentives, and the embarrassing human need to turn three games into a theory.
What we are not doing
No picks. No lock-of-the-night nonsense. No “advanced stat proves…” headline that collapses under a second tab. When evidence is thin, the piece should say so. When a metric is useful but limited, that limitation belongs in the article, not in a correction three weeks later.
